Day 1  April 22nd 2026
Our roving reporter met Dave Laramee. Always a good sign when the boss turns up. Dave appears to be getting the project flowing in the right direction. First day snafu was finding unexpected wiring, but all in a day's work, and Dave's crew will continue down the road cutting the surface past to Follen. They have ordered the protective part for the wires. Meanwhile, work continues..

Yikes ! 70 St Botolph has a generator the size of a small country arriving on Monday April 27th, taking up the space for 3 cars on St Botolph St. It will be there for about a week.

Weekend April 25th Clean Up Week
Huge shout out to Andrea Ciano Jr and his crew for setting the cleaning bar high before the community clean up on Saturday, April 25th. They dug, they rolled, and they understood the assignment. They left the block between the start of Harcourt and Garrison in great shape!

26th April - May 1st

Progress Update from week ending May 1st.
  • Approx 80 feet of new 36” diameter water pipe installed (replacing existing 42” pipe)
  • Work zone is currently about half-way between Harcourt and Garrison, where it will continue next week.
  • Note that there is a plated excavation remaining near the Harcourt intersection. The crew will be returning to this location to install a large valve and manhole structure. This is expected to be about 2-3 days of work, and I should be able to provide advance notice once this work is scheduled.

“Lowlights” from this week:
  • During the pipe work today, the water service feeding the building on the corner of Garrison (#8 Garrison) was accidentally struck by the excavator, and water service was cut-off. The crew is currently working to expose this service pipe and reconnect it as I type this email.
  • A gas service line within the water trench was also struck earlier this week, requiring response from BFD and National Grid to repair. This service pipe was unmarked in the street.
These service pipe incidents are uncommon, but unfortunately do happen as part of this work and slow down production. The crew will use these as “lessons learned” to hopefully avoid similar issues as they progress.

Some Questions & Answers on Water Main Replacement:
Will Parking Spaces be affected?
Yes, approx 14 parking spaces per block under construction will be restricted.
Any estimate on the level of noise and vibration for the three weeks per block?
The maximum noise/vibration generally comes from 2 construction activities: saw-cutting the pavement and vacuum excavation. Saw-cutting pavement is generally done at the beginning of a work week to cut the entire length that they plan to excavate over the course of the week. The vacuum truck will be required for the test pit, but for general pipe trenching and replacement, it should only be used sparingly when existing utilities are encountered within the trench (e.g., when a gas pipe is located crossing the water main,). General day-to-day noise primarily comes from machine engines and safety backup alarms. Noise will of course, be more impactful when the work zone is directly in front of homes as opposed to down the block. For most buildings, this should be limited to a few shifts.
