SBNA Committees (volunteer or appointed positions)

Membership / Communications – Chair is present or has a representative present at all membership meetings to sign up new members. Coordinates 2 to 3 mailings per year to the neighborhood for membership renewal including the annual membership meeting in September. Maintains membership database. Does membership outreach. Maintains email membership list. Sends electronic member communications and coordinates non-electronic member communications (including flyers, bulletin board, and letters/postcards). Works with the Clerk to create and maintain/update SBNA website. Other board tasks as appropriate. Attends and participates in all Board meetings.

Events – Chair(s) is in charge of planning and implementing quarterly social events for the neighborhood. This includes conceptualizing the event idea, publicizing the event, planning the details of the event, orchestrating the actual event, and coordinating volunteers to help with all of these tasks. Attends and participates in all Board meetings.

Streetscape / Neighborhood Improvements / Cleanup - This sub-committee serves as an intermediary between the St. Botolph Neighborhood Association (SBNA) and key City departments (e.g., Engineering and Planning, Neighborhood Relations, Public Works, and Parks and Recreation) in matters relating to City sponsored large-scale capital improvement projects. Committee members work to ensure that needs and concerns of the neighborhood “streetscape” are heard by the appropriate City departments, appropriate action is taken, and outcomes are communicated back to the SBNA. Organizes a spring and fall cleanup for the neighborhood. Secure City of Boston DPW and BTD assistance for the day of cleanup. Designs and distributes flyer one-week prior and twice the week of event. Arranges off street parking for the day of the event. Coordinates foods for the day of cleanup. Non-voting board position. Attends board meeting as required.

SBNA Architectural Review / Conservation Committee – (the “Review”) performs an independent design review process on proposed real estate projects within the defined St. Botolph Street neighborhood. The Review’s concerns include visible and non-visible alterations or additions that might (a) increase the scale of neighborhood structures, (b) alter the historic conception and original use of its buildings, (c) diminish its residential character, (d) increase population density and congestion, and (e) alter the roof-level views of neighbors. Time commitment varies depending on the number and complexity of ongoing projects proposed. (Last 2 years there were 5). There is a three-year residency requirement and at least one member must be an owner-occupant who owns no more than 3 properties within the district. Architecture, architectural history and historic preservation expertise a plus. Non-voting board position. Attends board meeting as required.
